Milan Ivanič

Milan Ivanič is from the former Czechoslovakia. He studied at the Hollar School of Art and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he met Roz, and came to England with her in 1970. He lived and worked in Devon, Sussex, London, and Stockton (California), before settling in the North West of England in 1986.

I want to make pictures that people will look at again and again and see something different every time

Milan’s work has been included in numerous exhibitions, and is in private collections in the UK, the US, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Norway, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. His paintings have been selected and exhibited in major national open competitions in London including: The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, The BP Portrait Award Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery and The Discerning Eye Exhibition at the Mall Galleries.

He is included in Buckman’s ‘Artists in Britain since 1945’.

Milan grew up in the village of Sebuzín, where the Elbe travels north into the mountains which divide Czecholsovakia (as it was at that time) from Germany. This was the landscape he loved and the subject of many of his early graphic works which were in the exhibition: From the Elbe to the Lune held at Gavagan Art in October 2019.

Milan has lived in many places in England, often returning to the places he loves in Sussex, but since 1986 the north of England has been his ‘home’, the landscape of Lancashire and Yorkshire.
